Crispy Crunchy Chicken Nuggets Recipe
CRISPY AIR FRYER TOFU NUGGETS
Can we take a moment and thank whoever invented the air fryer because wow we are so lucky 😫 these tofu nuggets are probably my favourite things to make in my air fryer (other than fries, of course) and they’re super simple and flavourful! This is a recipe I always like to recommend to friends and also clients who want to try tofu but don’t know how they can prepare it. It’s a crowd pleaser, I hope you try it out!
INGREDIENTS
• 1 block of extra firm tofu
• 1 – 1 ½ cups vegetarian chicken broth (or vegetable broth)
• ¾ cup whole wheat Panko breadcrumbs
• 1 tbsp nutritional yeast
• ¼ tsp salt
• ½ tsp thyme
• ½ tsp basil
• ⅓ tsp oregano
• 1 tsp celery salt
• 1 tsp black pepper
• 1 tsp dried mustard
• 1 tsp paprika
• 1 tbsp garlic powder
• 1 tsp ground ginger
• ¼ cup all-purpose flour
• Cooking spray
DIRECTIONS
1. Unwrap and drain the block of tofu, then wrap in a tea towel or paper towel and gently press to remove any excess moisture. Then, cut the tofu into nugget-sized pieces (I was able to get 24 pieces).
2. To marinate: place the sliced tofu into a loaf tin or another small container, pour the vegetarian chicken broth over the tofu and marinate overnight or place the sliced tofu and vegetarian chicken broth is a sauté pan and simmer for 10-15 minutes.
3. To make the crispy breading, whisk together the breadcrumbs, nutritional yeast, salt, thyme, basil, oregano, celery salt, black pepper, dried mustard, paprika, garlic powder, and ground ginger and set aside.
4. Drain the broth from the marinated tofu into a bowl and line up the bowls of flour, broth, and breadcrumbs.
5. Dip each tofu nugget into the flour, tapping off any excess, then into the broth, and finally into the breadcrumb mixture. Press the breadcrumbs gently into the tofu, then transfer to the air fryer basket. Ensure that the nuggets aren’t overlapping for optimal crispiness. Repeat with the remaining tofu.
6. Spray the nuggets with cooking spray and air-fry at 400F for 15 minutes, flipping halfway through and spraying with cooking spray to ensure both sides are golden brown.
